WHAT WE DO

The Healing and Justice Center uses a public health approach to reduce violence in Miami.

We employ, train and dispatch residents and other health workers via our hotline as trusted public safety professionals who create safety in our own neighborhoods. Our goal is to mediate conflicts to a peaceful resolution and guide those engaged in violence to different choices through assertive outreach, therapy, mentoring, case management, victim services and youth programming. In contrast to policing, our team creates safety without the collateral damage of incarceration.

HJC Programs:

  • Trauma Recovery Center: Based on the nationally recognized best practice model, our TRC provides free counseling and case management to help survivors of violent crime overcome barriers to accessing mental health treatment, health care, and legal resources in the acute aftermath of trauma.

  • Mentorship: We provide mentoring to youth and young adults to help them achieve short term life goals, such as obtaining their diploma or GED, employment, legal challenges and court support and building healthy relationships with family and friends.

  • Violence Intervention: We respond to shootings and provide support to the survivors, the surrounding neighborhood as well as those engaged in violence. We provide crisis counseling, conflict meditation and resource connection in order to restore peace and prevent incarceration.

  • Mental Health Crisis Response: We respond to conflict, mental health , substance use and homeless related crises. Our goal is to avoid forced institutionalization by addressing mental health crises without police or use of the Baker Act. Our Services include: wellness checks; homeless-related crisis; crisis counseling; suicidal prevention, assessment and intervention; grief and loss; substance abuse; first aid and non emergency medical care; resource connection and referrals

  • Stop the Bleed Workshops and Wound Care: We give community members life-saving training to prepare them to respond and treat gun wounds in an emergency. We also provide wound care and other medical care to survivors.

  • Weekly Community Walks and Wellness Checks: We conduct weekly community walks and wellness checks in neighborhoods after shootings to connect with the community about their needs and sign them up for services.
